Chinese Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine started in the mists of time - this can be said as herbal medicine originated from foods. Once people realised that the foods they were eating had an effect on how they were feeling, foods became medicinal.

In Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) foods (herbs) are categorised into five basic flours, astringent, sour, bitter, sweet and salty. Each flavour gives the herb different properties and it is then the job of the Practitioner to analyse the condition and use the appropriate herbs and doses. It is the role of the practitioner to combine herbs together into a formula. These formula are developed to take advantage of each individual herb's properties and either enhance or minimise the effects of individual herbs to achieve an harmonious, effective whole.
It also makes it possible to treat complicated diseases at the same time. That's why few Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors prescribe only a single herb to treat patients.

As the presenting condition changes so to does the formula change. The dose of individual herbs may change, the constituents of the formula may change and the dose to be taken can vary, as can the timing of the administration of the formula.

Some formula are best taken on an empty stomach, others are best after food.

Are the Herbs Safe?

All herbs used in Australia by a qualified, registered practitioner of CHM are approved by the TGA and are therefore safe for use. Australia also has a strict policy of not using endangered species.

Are there any Animal Products Used?

There are hundreds of herbs that can be used, some are plant based, some mineral and others animal. However, if you have a desire not to use animal products it is simply a case of telling the Doctor and the formula can be adjusted to suit.

What about my other Medications?

As with all good Health Care practitioners we need to know what other medication you are taking so as to avoid any possible complications, and we would also ask you to inform us of your western Doctor so we can, if necessary, confirm with them. We would also expect you would inform your GP that you are also receiving CM.
